Scary Movie (2026), release: June
5, 2026. Runtime: 95 minutes. Rating: R. Directed by Michael Tiddes, written
and produced by the Wayans brothers. 26 years after escaping Ghostface, the
"Core Four" are finally back together: Cindy Campbell (now a paranoid
shut-in, à la Jamie Lee Curtis in the latest Halloween), Shorty Meeks, Ray
Wilkins, and Brenda Meeks. The masked killer Ghostface returns and starts
targeting their kids, Sara and Tuesday. So they reunite to survive.
Critics' reviews are generally
negative, but the film is a box office hit. Critics praised the nostalgia and a
few jokes that hit the mark. The film performed strongly: a $30 million budget
with a $230.4 million gross, making it the 2nd highest-grossing film in the
franchise after the first one. There are several criticisms, from outdated jokes
to humor that isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Roger Ebert said, "The
Wayans come back, the jokes don't." The crude humor + slapstick from the
Wayans' 2000s era will probably only get a few laughs. The film feels
"blunt" and exhausted.

In my opinion:
Before this, the last franchise
entry was in 2013. As we know, this is a parody of currently popular horror
films. This year they're back, and you already know what to expect from the
film. Anna Faris returns to the franchise that made her name, alongside Regina
Hall and the Wayans brothers, in an attempt to revive the series. Was it
successful? I'll be honest, not really (in my opinion).
The core of the story is Scream.
As usual, several iconic horror films are included and parodied here: Sinners,
Terrifier, Weapons, KPop Demon Hunters, Longlegs, Get Out and more. You know
it, there’s nothing too new here except for the classic Wayans-style jokes from
previous Scary Movie films. What I liked was their consistency in keeping Anna
Faris as the lead, and I admit Faris is still great in this film.
There are definitely some
groan-worthy jokes. In my opinion, this film only exists to satisfy the
nostalgia craving for this famous parody franchise. Visually, in terms of audio
and cinematography, I’d rate it as standard. The only thing I give extra credit
to are the actors in this film. Will there be another sequel to this franchise?
I hope not. The previous Scary Movie films ended well enough. I don’t think it
was a great idea to bring it back. But that’s up to them. I just worry Hollywood
will get criticized for running out of ideas for making good movies.
