The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) Review: He Swore He Was Done, But Justice Demanded One More Bullet

Synopsis:

The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) is a 45-48 minute Marvel Special Presentation released on May 12, 2026 on Disney+, written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. After killing 4 members of the Gnucci family, Frank Castle tries to live quietly in New York. But Ma Gnucci places a bounty on Frank’s head. Now every criminal is hunting Frank to claim the reward. Frank, who initially wanted to stop killing, is pulled back into violence as PTSD trauma and hallucinations of his dead family haunt him. The plot is similar to John Wick 3: Frank becomes a fugitive and has to fight brutally to survive. Along the way, he meets a little girl who makes him start thinking about a new purpose—protecting other people’s families instead of just seeking revenge. The story was intentionally made self-contained and doesn’t connect much to the larger MCU, though it sets up Frank’s appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July 2026.

Critics say that Jon Bernthal is the best Frank Castle. Bernthal co-wrote the script, so the character feels personal and emotional. His acting is raw, full of pain, but still terrifying when he becomes the Punisher. However, some say the opening is slow, showing more of a depressed and hallucinating Frank. For fans who want immediate action, this feels too drawn out. The film received good scores. Rotten Tomatoes: 84% critics, 96% audience. On another RT version, it’s 76% critics, 87% audience. IMDb has a high rating, with many 9/10 and 10/10 scores from fans.

This film stars: Jon Bernthal, Judith Light, Deborah Ann Woll, Andre Royo and more.

In my opinion:

The Punisher: One Last Kill was a surprise for me before welcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, because some say this film is a bridge to that fourth Spider-Man movie. Previously I had seen 2 modern versions of The Punisher films, first starring Thomas Jane and second by Ray Stevenson. Each left its own impression: Thomas Jane was a calm but still deadly Punisher, and Ray Stevenson was the brutal version. This time Jon Bernthal delivers the ‘John Wick’ version of the Punisher. How could it not be— in this film Frank Castle does hand-to-hand combat combined with firearms. His incredible durability makes Jon’s version of Punisher the best. Just imagine, if a character as strong as Punisher (who is only human) were equipped with Stark or Wakanda technology, how deadly would the Punisher we have become?

It’s a shame this film is only under 1 hour, because it would have been exciting if the character Ma Gnucci was introduced in more depth. You’d probably agree that Frank and the Gnuccis’ business isn’t finished yet. Punisher is my favorite Marvel character, because I like heroes (or vigilantes) who rely purely on their own strength, without advanced technology, serums, magic, or cosmic radiation—purely human power. On the other hand, Frank represents a human soul that truly has extraordinary mental strength. Imagine what kind of mental strength is required when you’re faced with a tragedy that completely takes away the most precious and meaningful things in your life.

This short film truly feels like fresh air for the future of the MCU. Honestly, we’ve probably started to get tired of the same old Marvel characters, and we need something new. The Punisher could be one of the gateways to a new MCU era, and we’re definitely already impatient to see him in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, right? But by the way, why is it titled The Punisher: One Last Kill? Because he kills a lot in this film haha.. It’s still AWESOME!!

For me this one is 9/10.
