Over Your Dead Body (2026) Review: Love, Murder, And Theater. She’d Kill For The Role

Synopsis:

Over Your Dead Body (2026) is an English-language remake of the 2021 Norwegian film, The Trip. Directed by Jorma Taccone (of The Lonely Island), it was released in U.S. theaters on April 24, 2026, with a runtime of 105 minutes. It tells the story of a dysfunctional married couple, Dan and Lisa, who go to a remote cabin to “fix” their marriage. Secretly, both of them have plans to kill each other. Dan has already prepared duct tape, chloroform, and a saw. Lisa is no less crazy; she even brought a taser to incapacitate Dan. Their plans fall apart when a group of dangerous criminals suddenly shows up at the cabin. What started as mutual murder attempts turns into them having to work together to survive the intruders. This is Mr. & Mrs. Smith but as a crazier and darker splatstick version.

Critics praised the chemistry between Jason Segel and Samara Weaving as the main draw. Many said their comedic timing and reactions were spot on. The inventive practical gore and dark humor hit the mark if you like sadistic comedy delivered through adrenaline and absurdity. The film won the HEADLINER Audience Award at SXSW 2026. The audience score is 78% versus the critics’ score of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, according to critics, the downside is the inconsistent story. The setup starts out clever and funny, but once it hits the second act it becomes too brutal and loses the balance between romantic comedy and thriller, making the film feel “messy.” Some controversial scenes are considered too long and ruin the film’s vibe. Critics judged that the Norwegian version, The Trip, captured the essence of the story more successfully.

This film stars: Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis and more.

In my opinion:

Wow, this film is crazy! In my opinion, the role of Dan can’t be cast carelessly, because he has to represent a man who appears to try to stay positive, patient, and awkward-looking, yet actually hides a ruthless, reckless, and impulsive nature. The same goes for Lisa, a woman just as crazy as Dan, but skilled at hiding it so well that she fools Dan. I have to give credit to Jason Segel and Samara Weaving for the quality of their acting. Timothy Olyphant’s performance is no less impressive; there’s a unique charisma he brings when playing the villain. Visually and cinematographically it’s very good, and the audio is just standard, because the strength of this film lies in its story idea and the cast.

I think Samara Weaving is starting to be a perfect fit for bloody survival-themed films. The story idea is unique, even if it doesn’t seem entirely new, but this film shows that even brutal methods can be used to fix a husband-and-wife relationship. The director’s way of presenting flashbacks is spot on, and even the sarcastic and slapstick humor is woven in neatly. So I’d describe it as: from the beginning of the film to the middle, the pieces of the puzzle are put together one by one, and the rest is just enjoying the ending. Honestly, I haven't watched the film The Trip before so I thought this film was like “They Will Kill You” or “Ready or Not,” haha. Nice Film!

For me this one is 7.5/10.
