Synopsis:

Apex (2026) is an action thriller film with a runtime of 1 hour 35 minutes, directed by Baltasar Kormákur. The film was released on Netflix on April 24, 2026. Sasha is an extreme sports athlete skilled at rock climbing. After experiencing a tragedy in Norway that killed her boyfriend Tommy, Sasha is haunted by guilt. She goes to Wandarra National Park, Australia for solo kayaking on rapids, as a way to test her limits and find peace. There, she is warned by a local ranger that many people have gone missing on that route. Sasha meets Ben, a local adventurer who is initially friendly and helpful. But it turns out Ben is a deranged hunter who makes humans his prey. He challenges Sasha to a deadly chase game in the wilderness. What started as a healing journey turns into a fight for survival. Sasha must shed her "civilized" side and rely on survival instincts that are strikingly similar to her past mistakes.

Critics praised Charlize Theron’s strong performance as Sasha, who is athletic, tough, and resilient. Then Taron Egerton as Ben, the frightening yet charismatic villain. Baltasar Kormákur’s direction strengthens the survival elements. The scenes of rock climbing, waterfalls, and rapids feel real and intense. This is a 95-minute film without much filler.

This film stars: Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, Eric Bana and more.

In my opinion:

Nature is not evil, humans are. Nature works according to its nature, but humans are the ones who disturb it. That’s what I took from this film: in the wilderness, where I’m sure there are dangerous wild animals, deadly terrain, extreme conditions, if we obey the rules of nature then we will be fine. But if humans, they do not care about place and condition, if their evil side emerges, then it will be very dangerous. So I can conclude, the meaning of Apex here is human hunter.

The casting is spot on. Charlize Theron, every movie lover knows how bad-ass this woman is. Strong and unstoppable roles are already attached to Charlize. You can see it in The OldGuard, Aeon Flux, Fast & Furious 9, and she even played Clea in the MCU. Then there’s Taron Egerton, wow, I was shocked to see his terrifying side in this film. I still remember him as Eggsy in Kingsman. The maniac he portrayed gave me chills. It’s a shame Eric Bana only appears briefly, haha. In this film I came to understand how difficult climbing really is. A few weeks ago I also watched Skyscraper Live by Alex Honnold. Your grip must be as strong as steel, your physique must be very strong, and this is a sport that looks easy but is extremely difficult to do.

The Australian forest visuals are very beautiful, I give that a high score. The audio and cinematography are also not disappointing. Actually, the plot is simple, because the core is survival. But what makes it different is surviving from what or whom. My first guess was that Charlize and Taron are the main cast, then there’s an incident in the forest involving evil poachers. They have to survive against 2 things, humans and nature. Turns out… I was wrong, haha. There’s a dark fact revealed in this film, and it’s truly brutal. The downside might be that the tension isn’t very tense. I even saw the opportunity for Charlize to kick Taron off a cliff, but that clearly wasn’t done because it would make the film weird, haha. Good movie!

For me this one is 7.5/10.
