The Rip (2026) is an action thriller film directed and Written by Joe Carnahan (The Grey), story by Carnahan and Michael McGrale. Inspired by true story of Miami-Dade Police Captain Chris Casiano. Produced by Artists Equity (owned by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck), released on Netflix on January 16, 2026, duration 113 minutes, budget $100M. The title "The Rip" itself is a slang term for narcotics police for an operation to rob/seize money, drugs, or weapons from a cartel stash house.

The elite Miami-Dade narcotics team led by Lt. Dane Dumars is grieving after their colleague, Capt. Jackie Velez, died in a case related to the robbery of a stash house. Dumars gets an anonymous tip about a house in Hialeah. He and his team — JD Byrne, Mike Ro, Numa Baptiste, Lolo Salazar — raid a house inhabited by a woman, Desi Molina. In the attic, they find $20 million cash hidden inside barrels — the largest amount they have ever found. Far above expectations. Dumars does a small test, he tells each member of the team a different amount of money. Then he asks for all cell phones to be collected. Paranoia immediately explodes. Before they can report the procedure, the house phone rings — a threat appears to take some of the money and leave within 30 minutes or they will all be killed. Cartel, DEA, FBI, and internal greed begin to press them from all sides. A mission that should have been routine turns into a moral minefield, follow the law, or take the money?

This film has a rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 64 on Metacritic. Reviews of this film are mixed, with some critics praising the acting chemistry of Damon-Affleck which is the anchor of the film. Damon plays as a leader who is grounded and vulnerable (his character is based on a true story of a father who lost his child), Affleck is an intense hothead. The concept of $20M in the attic is a high-concept that is simple but effective — you immediately think "if I were there, would I take it?". The twist is quite fun, not a film that tries to be too smart. A strong debut for Netflix in early 2026, immediately entered the top most-watched.

The weakness of this film lies in the too many characters, so the backstory is thin — you don't know the team deeply other than Damon and Affleck. Carnahan's dialogue is full of profanity to the point of being comical, said some critics. Act 3 is somewhat predictable if you often watch crime thrillers. Susan Granger even said the title is more suitable as "Repetitive Informant Procedural".

Finally I got a film with actors with Triple A class. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are the right choices for this film. The tension is there from the beginning. This film invites us to guess who is the traitor among the team. Of course we will be made to be stunned, "Hooo, its YOU!?"

The charisma of Damon and Affleck really doesn't disappear, dashing with authority. I am happy with this story and for your information, this is inspired by a true story. This film is like Training Day meets Heat but the streaming version of the 70s cop thriller that Carnahan likes (he mentioned Serpico as inspiration).

Overall, "The Rip" is a tense and interesting thriller film, with strong acting and an interesting storyline. However, this film may not be the best choice for those looking for a fast and intense action film.

Many think "The Rip" means a tear or rip. In the world of Miami narcotics, it is a legendary slang. RIP = Robbery / Rip Operation — an operation to confiscate (rip) cash, drugs, and weapons from a stash house or cartel's storage house.

This term was born in the era of 1980s Miami "Cocaine Cowboys". At that time Miami was the cocaine capital of the world. Cartels did not keep money in banks, but in ordinary houses in suburban areas. Miami-Dade narcotics police created a special team whose only task was: get a tip, raid, secure, seize. In the field they call it "going on a rip". Then how does it work?

• TIP. Secret intel comes in — stash house address, estimated contents. In the film, Dumars gets an anonymous tip.

The film set in Hialeah is not chosen arbitrarily. Hialeah is a dense suburb in the northwest of Miami-Dade. The combination of warehouse and residential makes it perfect to hide contraband far from the Port of Miami. Close to I-75, I-95, and Palmetto Expressway for fast distribution. The cash-based immigrant community is also used for money laundering cover. In the real world, DEA and Miami-Dade Narcotics did find hundreds of stash houses there between 2010-2024.

This film is inspired by the true story of Miami-Dade Narcotics Captain Chris Casiano — a veteran commander who was active in covert stash house operations in western Miami-Dade. He is known for modernizing intel-based rip tactics and evidence seizure protocols. In the film, the character of Dumars (Matt Damon) is a tribute to his dedication, including the personal detail that Casiano lost his son in real life. So, when you watch The Rip, you are not just watching fiction — you are watching a procedure that really exists and is dangerous in Miami.
