The Confession (2026) Review: A Flawed Horror Film Tied to the Pied Piper Legend

Synopsis:

The Confession (2026), directed by Will Cannon, tells the story of Naomi, a musician who has just lost her husband and returns to her childhood home. There, she discovers a cassette tape on which her father, Arthur Riley, confesses to murdering Royce Cobb to protect the townspeople, and especially the children, from an unknown evil force.

At first skeptical, Naomi asks an old friend for help to investigate the mystery. Instead, they uncover horrifying details about the town’s history. Things get worse when Naomi’s son begins exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior. Desperate, Naomi must fight to stop the evil before it’s too late. The film explores themes of grief, family legacy, and morality, as Naomi struggles to understand the truth behind her father’s confession and to protect her son from the evil force that threatens them.

The bottom line: a mother finds her father’s murder confession, and now her son is showing the same "darkness."

The film has received mixed reviews. Critics gave it credit for maintaining suspense and mystery. Although the plot can be confusing at times, the screenplay succeeds in keeping viewers curious until the end. The atmosphere is also well-presented; the direction makes good use of lighting, mood, and subtle sound design. Italia Ricci delivers a standout performance as a mother caught between love and supernatural terror. Zachary Golinger is also strong in portraying a child’s fear and innocence.

However, the film is not without flaws. The plot is considered messy. Elements like the "name on the bones" and the jumpy timeline are confusing. Some say the plot is "all over the place" and that the

explanation of the life-and-death portals is unclear. A few scenes were also said to resemble Poltergeist. The controversial ending made some viewers feel that it ruined the film.

At first, I was confused and tried to guess what was happening in this film. What evil force was targeting them? A riddle suggested a connection to rats? After observing it in detail, I realized it has ties to a German folktale: The Pied Piper of Hamelin. 

In that story, the Piper leads the children away with his flute and disappears into a hillside. But in this film, children are no longer his target. Naomi must try to solve the mystery and save everyone. In terms of story concept, the film is very good. Unfortunately, there is no real tension. Viewers are asked to guess and think about what is happening. I personally struggled so much that I yawned 5 times while watching it (haha..).

The Confession is a horror film that is "flawed but still engaging." It successfully balances horror and emotion, making it a watch that forces you to guess until the final scene. But if you get easily frustrated by plot holes, it might feel like a must-skip.

For me this one is 6/10.

"From folklore to horror: The legend of the Piper lives on."

Have you ever heard of the Pied Piper of Hamelin? The origin of the legend of "The Pied Piper" comes from the town of Hamelin, Germany, around the year 1284. "Pied" means "multicolored" because the piper’s clothes were patched with many colors. The story was first recorded by monks and later popularized by writers like the Brothers Grimm in the 19th century. To this day, no one knows for certain what really happened. There are 3 main theories: a rat plague, a mass migration of young people, or another tragic event. But the most famous fairytale version goes like this:

The Rat Plague.

One day the town of Hamelin was overrun by rats. They were everywhere: in homes, in grain barns, in the streets. The townspeople panicked. The mayor promised a large reward to anyone who could get rid of the rats. Suddenly, a strange man in patchwork, multicolored clothes appeared. He claimed he could drive away all the rats with his flute. The mayor agreed. The Piper began to play. Amazingly! From the sewers, homes, and market, all the rats poured out, following the rhythm of his music. He led them out of town, toward the Weser River. All the rats jumped into the river and drowned. Hamelin was clean. The problem was, once the town was clean, the mayor and the people of Hamelin broke their promise. They refused to pay the promised reward. "Ah, he’s just a kid with a flute," they said.

The Piper was furious. He left, but swore he would return. A few weeks later, on June 26th (close with St. John’s Day), the Piper returned. This time his clothes were more beautiful, and his flute played an even more beautiful melody. This time, it wasn’t rats that followed him, but 130 children of Hamelin. From the youngest to teenagers, they all left their homes and followed the music as if hypnotized. They walked out of the town gates, toward a hill. At the foot of the hill was an open stone door. All the children went inside, and the door closed forever. Not a single one returned. Only 3 children survived: 1 deaf child, 1 blind child, and 1 lame child. Because they couldn’t follow perfectly.

This story teaches us to keep our promises, not to be greedy, and not to underestimate the power of art and music. Because music has the power to move, to heal, but it can also "kidnap" if misused.

In Hamelin, Germany, there is still "Hamelin Street" where, to this day, it is said that no music may be played on it, to honor the children who were lost. Because of this tragedy, June 26th is commemorated as a day of mourning in that town. This story is often used as a political metaphor: "Pied Piper" = a charismatic leader who misleads the masses. The legend of the Pied Piper reminds us that when we ignore justice and break our promises, it is often the most innocent generation that suffers the most.
