Synopsis:
"Palestine 36" (2025), is a historical drama film that tells the story of the Palestinian people's struggle against British colonial rule from 1936 to 1939.
The film follows Yusuf, a young Palestinian man caught between life in the village and the city of Jerusalem.
He works as a driver for a journalist named Amir and his wife, Khuloud, a couple who use their position to criticize British policies in Palestine
As violence
escalates, Yusuf must choose between joining the resistance or holding onto
hope for a better future.
Palestine 36 is a powerful and emotional film with solid acting from its cast. The film presents a clear picture of the Palestinian people's struggle and the historical context relevant to the current situation
Palestine 36
offers a profound experience about Palestinian history and identity, as well as
how this conflict continues to affect modern society.
The film also highlights
the importance of appreciating the Palestinian people's perspective and how
history can connect with the present context.
Palestine 36
is a film that not only showcases art but also serves as an effort to introduce
and understand the Palestinian conflict better.
This film is a
large-scale historical drama involving collaborations with the British Film
Institute, Doha Film Institute, and TRT Sinema. Even Husam Zumlot, the newly
appointed Palestinian ambassador to the UK, attended the cinematic event.
The film is
directed by Annemarie Jacir and stars Palestinian actors such as Hiam Abbass,
Kamel El Basha, and Yasmine Al Massri. It also features British Hollywood actor
Jeremy Irons and Irish actor Liam Cunningham.
The film has a
100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 24 reviews. It was screened at the 2025
BFI London Film Festival and the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Made
in 2025, Palestine 36 will be officially released in late 2025 and January
2026.
Despite
gaining significant attention, including a nomination for Best International
Feature at the Oscars, some critics felt the film was too long and some
characters were underdeveloped.
In my opinion:
I agree with the critics' opinion that the characters in this film are
too brief and unfocused. Yusuf, whom I thought was the main character, doesn't
get much screen time and is even overshadowed by Khaloud, who serves as our
navigator in the film. However, I think the story is good. The climax, though,
feels a bit rushed.
So, if you and your friends are interested in knowing more about Palestinian history, Palestine 36 should definitely be on your 2026 movie list.
For me this one is 7/10.
