Synopsis:
Project Hail Mary (2026) is a
sci-fi film directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, adapted from the
hard sci-fi novel by Andy Weir, the author of The Martian. Ryland Grace awakens
from a coma aboard the spaceship Hail Mary, 12 light-years from Earth, with no
memory of who he is or why he’s there. The two other crew members are already
dead. Slowly, his memories return and start to remember that Earth is dying
because of a microorganism called “Astrophage” that is consuming the Sun,
causing global temperatures to drop by 10–15 degrees and threatening billions
of lives.
Grace is a former molecular
biologist who became a science teacher, forcibly recruited by international
coordinator, Eva Stratt, for a suicide mission to the star named Tau Ceti — the
only star that hasn’t dimmed despite being infected by Astrophage. The goal:
find out why Tau Ceti survived and send the data back to Earth.
This film stars: Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller, James Ortiz, Ken Leung and more.
In my opinion:
I was hesitant to watch this film at first, because there was a chance I’d be confused watching a movie about space. There are some astronomy terms and substances here, but luckily I could follow it well enough. The story isn’t complicated — it’s a mission to save the world from a “thing” called Astrophage, which can devour the sun. The bottom line is that the apocalypse will happen if it isn’t stopped. Remember the film Armageddon? That’s what I thought from the moment I started watching this. Then what happened? Turns out this film is unlike any other.
Let’s think about it simply:
there’s a team of humans from Earth sent into space for a mission to save
Earth, and that’s it. They’re sent to investigate a star or planet that
apparently can’t be consumed by Astrophage. Unexpectedly, all the crew die
except for one scientist. He has to fight to carry out this mission. Is that
all? Oh... no. On this mission, he meets... an alien... YES THAT’S RIGHT... AN
ALIEN!!! How unlucky he is!
Don’t think this will be like the
Alien films where it’s dangerous and wants to kill or even eat humans. It turns
out this alien has the same problem as humans on Earth (this alien comes from a
planet called Erid). They also have a problem with Astrophage! WOW, this is the
first time I’ve seen a story like this. Sorry if I’m being hyperbolic, but this
film is truly touching. This is the first time I’ve sympathized with an Alien,
because he’s not evil — he cares and wants to help. I really love this film.
This is Hollywood-grade material,
with absolutely beautiful visuals, audio, and cinematography. I was truly
amazed by the outer space visuals in this film and had to accept the fact that
our Earth is so tiny. For those of you who like space fiction films that also
include drama about friendship, intellectual humility, and a realistic version
of bravery, I highly, highly recommend this film. Wunderbar!
For me this one is 9/10.
