Synospis:

"Kyojo: Reunion" (2026) is a Japanese psychological thriller film directed by Isamu Nakae, adapted from Hiroki Nagaoka's novel, "Kyojo".

Set in an elite police academy, the film follows instructors and trainees reunited in extreme conditions, where past secrets, guilt, and unresolved trauma resurface. This film is a continuation of the Kyojo series, known for its cold atmosphere and brutal story. Here, weakness is punished, mistakes are unforgiven, and survival depends on mental strength.

Kyojo: Reunion was released on Netflix on January 1, 2026, as the first part of the Kyojo film project, followed by Kyojo: Requiem in theaters on February 20, 2026.

This film stars: Eiji Akaso, Atsushi Arai, Haruka Fukuhara, Gaku Hamada and more.

In my opinion:

As I guessed, there seems to be a preceding film, as I read some synopses mentioning 'returning to the Police Academy...'. This film takes the POV of instructor Kimichika Kazama. Honestly, I'm unsure about the genre. Some platforms label it 'Crime' and 'Mystery', but what I saw was a depiction of discipline in a Japanese police academy – a tutorial film on becoming a proper Japanese police officer.

The opening scene led me to expect a murder investigation, and I was excited, knowing Japanese films excel in crime and murder genres. However, the film focused on trainees failing their training, not just due to indiscipline or incompetence, but personal factors.

By the end, I was confused about what was happening. Maybe I just didn't understand, or I missed the preceding film. Visuals, audio, and cinematography were good, and the cast performed well, but the plot required more understanding.

For me this one is 6.5/10.
