Synopsis:
"This Is I" (2026) is a Japanese biographical drama film directed by Yusaku Matsumoto, available on Netflix starting February 10, 2026.
Based on the true story of Ai Haruna, a
Japanese transgender icon, the film narrates the journey of Kenji Onishi, a
young man aspiring to be an idol but struggling with identity and social
pressures.
He meets Dr. Koji Wada, a doctor
who helps Kenji understand his true self and supports him through gender
reassignment surgery. Their bond grows into a strong connection, forged through
shared experiences of isolation and social judgment.
This film stars: Haruki Mochizuki, Tae Kimura, Seiji Chihara, Ataru Nakamura and more.
In my opinion:
If it weren't for this film, I wouldn't have known about Ai Haruna, a Japanese transgender personality with a Wikipedia page. Ai Haruna was the winner of the 2009 Miss International Queen. Honestly, I'm not an LGBTQ+ supporter, but I don't reject their existence either. Everyone has the right to live, and as long as they don't harm others, we shouldn't judge.
The film gave me insight into the feelings of transgender individuals. It genuinely portrays a transgender person's struggle for their identity. I'm sure there are pros and cons to this, but isn't it God's place to judge? As for the film itself, I loved everything – the visuals, audio, and cinematography were near perfect. I've never doubted Japanese actors' talent; they're incredibly natural. I'd call this a biography blended with drama and musical elements – it's beautiful and sweet.
The struggle of Dr. Koji Wada in
helping 'them' is commendable. Though it was wrong by some standards, Dr. Wada
chose humanity over judgment, preserving his patients' dreams and souls.
The film is about survival, losing people who believed in you, yet choosing to stand and move forward. However, I want to inform you that there are LGBTQ elements in this film. So, I hope you handle it wisely.
For me this one is 9/10.
